Phaino: A 3D Printed Jewelry Collection Combining Art and Technology

Conceptual Minimalism Transformed into Wearable Art

The Phaino collection, designed by Zoi Roupakia, is a stunning example of how art and technology can merge to create unique and meaningful jewelry pieces. Inspired by the concept of minimalism, Roupakia aims to capture the essence of a moment, feeling, or idea through her conceptual artworks, which are then transformed into 3D printed wearable art.

The Phaino collection is a series of 3D printed pendants and earrings that serve as a connective link between ideas, art, and tangible objects. Each piece is based on a minimalistic artwork created by Roupakia, where just a few lines are enough to convey a thought or an idea. By removing the noise and simplifying the design, Roupakia allows the human mind to connect with the conceptual artwork and evoke emotions or thoughts.

What sets the Phaino collection apart is its use of 3D printing technology. Each minimalistic artwork is transformed into a 3D model, which is then printed using 14K gold or rhodium plated brass. The result is a collection of semiotic jewelry pieces that have meaning when worn, bridging the gap between art and the physical world.

The technical specifications of the Phaino collection vary in length, ranging from 3cm to 7cm, and width, ranging from 3cm to 5cm. This allows for a diverse range of designs that can be customized to suit individual preferences.

Throughout the design process, Roupakia faced the challenge of combining art, fashion, and technology in a way that retained the artistic value and aesthetic beauty of the minimalistic artworks. The Phaino collection successfully strikes a balance between these three pillars, showcasing the possibilities that arise when creativity and technology intersect.

The Phaino collection was created between August 2017 and February 2018, and it was part of the Wolf&Badger online collection. Some of the artworks from the collection were also exhibited at the Arts Festival of Jesus College Cambridge in 2018 and 2019, as well as being displayed at the Four Seasons Astir Palace art collection.

Roupakia's research for the Phaino collection delves into conceptual minimalism, exploring the quest to find the absolute essence of things and the connection between human perception and semiotics. By transforming her minimalistic designs into 3D printed jewelry, Roupakia adds a tangible link between abstract concepts and the physical world.

The Phaino collection has garnered recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements. The Phaino collection is celebrated for its integration of industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and its ability to provide fulfillment and positive feelings to its wearers.

With its unique blend of art, technology, and conceptual minimalism, the Phaino collection stands as a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in the world of jewelry design. Each piece serves as a wearable artwork, revealing a deeper meaning and connection to the wearer.
